What is a Pulmonary Function Test?
A Pulmonary Function Test is a non-invasive procedure that measures how well your lungs are working. It evaluates various lung functions, including airflow, lung volume, and the ability to exchange gases like oxygen and carbon dioxide. The results help doctors diagnose lung conditions, determine the severity of diseases, and monitor the progress of treatments.
The most common PFT, which measures how much air you can inhale and exhale and how quickly you can exhale.
Measures the total amount of air your lungs can hold and other lung volumes.
Assesses how well gases like oxygen move from your lungs into your blood.
Measures your peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR), which can indicate the presence of asthma or other lung diseases.
The test is simple, non-invasive, and usually takes about 20-30 minutes. A technician will ask you to breathe into a device called a spirometer or other specialized equipment. The procedure involves breathing in deeply, exhaling forcefully, and sometimes holding your breath for short intervals. Depending on the test, you may be asked to take medication or use a bronchodilator beforehand to assess how your lungs respond.
